Photo Gallery | National magazine lists Memphis as one of the unhealthiest cities for women

Memphis is listed as the fourth unhealthiest city for women according to Women's Health Magazine.

Women's Health's research team compiled data on 38 measures of health and well being, such as access to medical care, cancer rates, obesity rates and longevity.

The team also looked at lifestyle factors — everything from nutrition to unemployment to happiness and fitness — by using survey responses from places like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Census and the American Cancer Society.

As Memphis is listed as one of the worst cities for Women's health, CEO of Healthy Memphis Common Table Renee Frazier said Memphis has been improving the environment to make it healthier for women and men in Memphis.

"For the first time in years, we have seen a decrease in obesity because we are focusing on healthy eating and activities," he said.

Frazier said the change is because of adjusting local polices and installing bike lanes and walkways.

"We have 14 farmers markets for anyone... if we want to change behavior, we have to change the environment — and that's exactly what we're doing," he said.

Another initiative is that Shelby County controlled vending machines are serving better snacks; 70 machines will serve food that's under 150 calories.

Frazier mentioned Healthy Memphis is working with restaurants to have calories labeled on their menu.

"There's a lot of work going on in Memphis," he said.
