Kroger offers double fuel points during the summer

Double fuel points will begin Memorial Day weekend and continue through the summer driving season. Kroger customers can earn double fuel points on regular grocery purchases every time they shop Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until September 1st.

A digital coupon is available to customers beginning this week for download through Kroger’s mobile app or online here. The first coupon will be valid for every weekend from May 24th through June 30th, with subsequent monthly coupons appearing later for a limited time. “Based on our customers’ response to last year’s summer fuel promotion, we know how much they appreciate saving money at the pump,” said Joe Bell, Manager of Marketing and Public Affairs for Kroger’s Delta Division.

Memphis will celebrate National Train Day at the  Amtrak Central Station on Saturday, May 11th, with a  passenger train and kid's activities from 11am to 4 pm. The Trolley system has been extended twice and now consists of three lines; the Main Street Line, Riverfront Loop, and the Madison Avenue Line. All of the Memphis Trolley lines are operated by the Memphis Area Transit Authority. 1.34 million trips were made on the system in 2011-2012, the highest of any rail system in the USA.

Unattractive I-40 overpass area to get spruced up

The Downtown Memphis Commission plans to enhance the I-40 overpass area along Main Street.

O.T. Marshall Architects came up with a preliminary design plan that includes creative underpass lighting, public art, and landscaping enhancements.  The firm was hired using grant money from Housing and Community Development's Neighborhood Development Program.

According to the DMC, the area will become a much more appealing gateway to the Pinch District.  The area along North Main is currently undergoing a renaissance thanks to the redevelopment of The Pyramid.

Boundaries set for KKK rally

Boundaries set for KKK rally

Many residents and tourists are wondering what the weekend has to hold as the KKK has a rally downtown.

Diego Castellanos and Denise Benoit are tourists in town, by chance, on the same weekend the KKK will rally downtown. They said their Saturday plans will take them elsewhere, outside boundaries containing a potentially volatile mixture.

Memphis police will close down a huge chunk of downtown.

The boundaries stretch from Poplar Avenue to North Front Street, back down Jefferson Avenue and connecing back to Poplar on North 4th Street.

Police said no pedestrians, no cars, no traffic whatsoever allowed within.

"I think we'll be slow," said Jack's Food owner Tim Ahsan. He has a restaurant inside the boundaries.

Ahsan was in Memphis for the last rally in 1998. He is hoping for a better experience this year.

"We got broken window and get all the trouble," he said recalling the last rally.

MATA will detour some trolley lines until 6 p.m.

The average commute time for Memphians was 23.7 minutes.

The Bluff City ranked No. 307 out of 373 areas in the region, with about 10.9 percent of residents in the metro area commute more than 45 minutes to work.
