Grizzlies making home court healthy

The Memphis Grizzlies are hosting two Healthy Home Court events this week, to encourage fitness and nutrition in Mid-South youth.

You can attend the first event at the Fogleman YMCA at 245 Madison Ave. this Thursday, Nov. 11, at 5:30 p.m.

The second event will be Friday, Nove. 12, at 7:30 a.m. at Mitchell High School on 658 West Mitchell Rd.

Grizzlies, Ashley Furniture giving veterans free tickets

The Memphis Grizzlies are partnering with Ashley Furniture HomeStore to celebrate Veteran’s Day by offering 500 free tickets to the heroes who are currently serving in the United States military to the Grizzlies contest against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, Nov. 10.

“We know that it is imperative to honor our veterans and those who are serving in the armed forces each and every day, and holidays like Veteran’s Day make it even more important to pay tribute to them,” said Greg Campbell, Grizzlies President of Business Operations.  “This offer is our little way of saying thanks to them for doing something so significant for our country.”

Military personnel who are interested in taking advantage of this offer can pick up their tickets with valid military identification at the FedExForum box office starting Monday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. through Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. Limit two per person.

Kapone, symphony to play Grizzlies first game

Grizzlies fans are in for an exciting evening of music during the team’s home opener on Oct. 27.

The Memphis Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with rapper Al Kapone to kick off the Grizzlies’ 10th anniversary season.

"Our entertainment lineup on opening night will speak to the city's deep musical roots and acknowledge our own place in the past and future of the fabric of Memphis," said Greg Campbell, the Grizzlies' president of business operations.

Kapone and the orchestra will play together before the game starts and more musicians will hit the stage during halftime.

“A Memphis Music Showcase will present Booker T. Jones of Booker T. and the MGs, Stax music legends The Barkays, soul-music star Vaneese Thomas (daughter of the legendary Rufus Thomas) and Garry Goin and the Memphis Grizzlies House Band,” according to a press release.

St. Jude marathon, half-marathon sold out

St. Jude announced today that there aren’t any more spots available in either its marathon or half-marathon. However, runners can still register to race in the Memphis Grizzlies House 5K and the hospital’s Family Race and Kids Marathon

Even if you’ve already secured your spot in one of the sold out races, organizers say you can do a little more to help the patients by becoming a St. Jude Hero.

Update: City looking for input on skatepark

The city wants your input on its first skateboard park.

City leaders and representatives from skatepark design firm Wormhoudt and Associates met with the public Tuesday night to get suggestions about the new facility. And now, the city has posted an online survey so skaters can vote for the park's design elements.

Special athletes take the field at CBHS

More than 100 athletes are expected to compete in the 19th annual St. Ann Special Athletes Fun Day next month.

Adults and kids will spend their day competing in events like soccer, bean toss and track and field at Christian Brothers High School on Saturday, Oct. 9.

“Athletes from every school and church throughout the Memphis area have been invited to participate and every athlete will receive ribbons in each event they participate in,” according to a written statement. “Cheerleaders from area schools will also be there to cheer special athletes as they receive their participation ribbons.”

Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the opening ceremonies begin a 9 a.m.

Walk to support cancer victims

Dove Cancer Support is hosting its second annual Hope Walk early next month.

Registration for the walk is $20 and starts at 7 a.m. on sat. Oct. 2 at the neighborhood Church of God at 619 Pierce St. The walk starts at 8 a.m.

The group’s founder Annie Hicks is a breast cancer survivor. Hicks founded the group in order to help other cancer victims and survivors deal with the disease.
