New Firehouse Subs to open

New Firehouse Subs to open

Another restaurant is opening on Union Avenue in Midtown Memphis. Firehouse Subs will be the latest restaurant to call Midtown home.

Firehouse Subs is planning to be open by mid-July in the same shopping center as FedEx Office and Verizon Wireless. The space is currently being leased by FedEx Office and will undergo renovations to split the current FedEx Office store into two spaces.

Firehouse Subs has a fast casual restaurant concept.  This will be the sixth Firehouse Subs to open in the Memphis area.  The Union Avenue location will join locations in East Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, on Stage Road in Memphis, and Southaven, Mississippi.

MIFA 'Meals on Wheels' needs your vote to win FedEx grant

MIFA 'Meals on Wheels' needs your vote to win FedEx grant

The Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) is in the running to win a grant for its Meals on Wheels program, but the nonprofit needs your help to win.

According to MIFA, Memphis was declared the hunger capital of the country in 2011.

The Meals on Wheels program delivers 1,800 hot lunches each day to seniors in the community who are unable to leave their homes.

Now, MIFA is one of several nonprofits competing for a grant from FedEx.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, FedEx is sponsoring a Global Month of Service.  The shipping giant is encouraging its own team members to team up with nonprofits to make a difference in their communities.

The "Friends of the MIFA Maniacs" are hoping for your votes in order to give the Meals on Wheels program a boost so it can make an even bigger impact on the Memphis community.

BBB event offers free document shredding

The Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South and Cintas will offer free document shredding at the BBB's 2013 Secure Your ID Day event.

Bring up to 10 boxes or bags of documents Saturday, April 20, 9 a.m. to noon, to the parking lot of The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union Ave. You won't even have to get out of your car!

WHAT TO SHRED -- AND WHEN TO SHRED IT

Shred canceled checks and debit/credit card receipts as soon as you reconcile them with your bank or credit card statements.

For tax documents, the conventional wisdom has been to keep them for at least seven years before you destroy them, but IRS spokesperson Dan Boone said that's changed.
