The Kooky Canuck enjoys sweet success at The Jack

Canadians/Memphians Shawn and Lana Danko, owners of the Kooky Canuck in downtown Memphis, took their culinary skills to Lynchburg Tennessee over the weekend to compete in the 23rd Annual Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational Barbeque Contest and came away big winners.

More than 80 invited teams from across the country and around the world gathered in the hollow near the Jack Daniel's Distillery to fire up their grills for one of the biggest barbeque events of the year.  This Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event is one of the most anticipated competions for some of the best grillers in the world.  They're competeing in  seven cooking catagories for cash and the coveted Jack Daniel's barrel top trophy.  When you bring the best grillers in the world into one areana you know the food is going to be better than good and the competion stiff.

For the past few years I've had the honor to be invited to judge this prestigeous event.  The barbeque is some of the best in the world and this year was no exception.  This year I was also pleasantly surprised to run into the Kooky Canuck's themselves, Shawn and Lana, the evening prior to judging.  They, along with some fellow Canadian friends, were there to bring their best recipes to this barbecue extravaganza and that they did.

There are seven catagories in the contest.  Shawn and his team did very well in the overall competion taking first place in the Home Cooking from the Homeland catagory and eighth place in Dessert.

The next time you dine out downtown at the Kooky Canuck with thoughts of tackling the four pound Kookamonga Burger, you might want to see if there's some barbeque on the menu and you definitely want to save room for dessert.  And, it you ever find yourself traveling through Middle Tennessee in late October then you definitely want make a stop in Lynchburg for the Fall Festival and the Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational Barbeque Contest.
