National Civil Rights Museum will partially close for renovation

National Civil Rights Museum will partially close for renovation

Time is running out to see the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel.

Starting next week, renovations will partially close the historic site for one year. The renovation and partial closure is a first in its history.

The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel opened 21 years ago to much fanfare with what was considered, back then, state of the art interactive exhibits.

But, that was then, and this is now.

"People no longer walk through the hallowed halls of museums and read a book on the wall. They wanna be engaged in different ways and, if things aren't tivo'ed, ipod'ed, downloaded, and textable, you know, a lot of people are just not -- it doesn't resonate with them in the same way, anymore," said Beverly Robertson, National Civil Rights Museum.

Local Gastropub one of first to open in Overton Square rebirth

Local Gastropub one of first to open in Overton Square rebirth

Wednesday night, "Local on the Square" kicked off its grand opening inside the old Yosemite Sam's.

"We are extremely excited to join the neighborhood and be a part of the revitalization of Overton Square," said floor manager Christopher McDaniel.

The valets in bright blue jackets bring a new feel to the corner of South Cooper and Madison, in the heart of Midtown Memphis. The restaurant also has a deck out back.

The menu boasts the same fare as the downtown Memphis sister restaurant "Local Gastropub."

The 100-year-old, nearly 6000-square-foot, two-story building has undergone extensive renovations since the Yosemite’s 39-year run at the busy intersection.

The opening comes on the brink of a revitalization of Overton Square. Construction is underway to install a water retention basin and parking lot.

"We are looking forward to meeting and getting to know our new friends and family in the Midtown area," McDaniel added.
