Mud Island celebrating Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is just days away and Mud Island is celebrating with a free family fun-filled event called "Funday Sunday."

There will be mini duck races on the Mini Mississippi, rabbit trail train rides, an Easter egg hunt, an Easter Bunny meet and greet and more.

This Easter fun event will be held April 24 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to anyone.

Shelby Farms has big plans for Earth Week

The 5th annual Earth Week at Shelby Farms Park will see an exciting shift in style and setting in 2011.

The week-long series of events runs from April 17 through 23 and will be held on the shores of Patriot Lake near the visitor center, reflecting the focus of the Park’s next big project - expanding Patriot Lake to nearly twice its size.

Earth Week will promote environmental stewardship, nature, health and recreation with events that offer fun and entertainment for the entire family.

With the budding season comes Spring Break and its long days with little to do. Year round, both the Pink Palace Museum and Lichterman Nature Center offer free admissions after 1 p.m. Tuesdays. During the month of March we invite you to check out our new programming on your Spring Break Tuesday afternoons.

All locations of the Memphis Public Library and Information Center will be closed Monday, Feb. 21 for Presidents Day.

Customers have the option of reserving or renewing books by going to the library’s website or calling 452-2047.

New pedestrian bridge could cross Miss. River

A new plan could end with Memphis and West Memphis being united by a pedestrian bridge spanning the Mississippi River.

“To be able to walk or bike across the Mississippi River will be an amazing experience,” said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.

Jimmy Griffin honored with Brass Note on Beale

Oscar-winning musician and composer Jimmy Griffin will be honored with a note on the Beale Street Brass Note Walk of Fame on Nov. 20. 

Raised in Memphis, Griffin’s debut album was the Jimmy Bowen produced Summer Holiday. Griffin co-founded the 70’s soft rock group Bread along with bandmate David Gates.  Bread scored with hits such as “Make it With You”, “If”, and “Everything I Own."

Wharton launches campaign to end blight

A C Wharton plans to celebrate a year in the mayor’s office by attacking dilapidated properties in the city.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. will mark his first year in office by personally filing 135 lawsuits against blighted property owners under the Neighborhood Preservation Act today (Wednesday) at 11:30 a.m.

Action News 5 will have more on Wharton's new plan after his news conference.
