53th Anniversary of sit-in celebrated in a drug store

A group of Mid-South students helped make history 53 years ago. They participated in one of the first sit-in movements in Memphis.

Five LeMoyne-Owen College students, sat-in at the Walgreens in downtown off Main Street.

Grace Austin Meacham was one of those students.

She said although waitress would not serve them and the managers told them the store was closed.

The group of students continued to sit and read their books peacefully.

"They told us that there was a bomb threat," said Meacham.  "That we had to leave there was a bomb threat, but we continued to sit. We actually sat there 3 hours before the police came and we were told were under arrest."

The Downtown Memphis Commission plans to enhance the I-40 overpass area along Main Street.

O.T. Marshall Architects came up with a preliminary design plan that includes creative underpass lighting, public art, and landscaping enhancements.  The firm was hired using grant money from Housing and Community Development's Neighborhood Development Program.

According to the DMC, the area will become a much more appealing gateway to the Pinch District.  The area along North Main is currently undergoing a renaissance thanks to the redevelopment of The Pyramid.
