Public invited to MCS charter surrender meetings

Memphis City Schools commissioners are hosting a series of public meetings on the district's proposal to surrender its charter.

Commissioners Jeff Warren and Kenneth Whalum will host a public meeting tonight at White Station High School.

Board member Betty Mallott will hold another meeting on Wednesday at Ridgeway HIgh School.

Commissioner Tomeka Hart will hold a meeting at Douglass High School on Thursday. Meanwhile, Commissioner Sara Lewis will also host a meeting on Thursday. her meeting will be held at Mitchell High School.

All meetings will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

In an effort to provide information on the Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools consolidation issue, the National Civil Rights Museum is holding a public information forum on Wednesday, March 2.

Participants include Memphis City Schools Board member Martavious Jones, Shelby County Schools Board Chair David Pickler and University of Memphis Law professor David Kiel.

Rep. Steve Cohen will host a meeting with his constituents on Jan. 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Clifford Davis/Odell Horton Federal Building.

In recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam teamed up with Memphis Mayor A C Wharton to deliver meals for MIFA.

Haslam, his wife and Wharton delivered meals across the city as part of a national day of service.

Deberry to challenge Tenn. House minority leader

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - At least two Democratic lawmakers have said they will challenge House Minority Leader Gary Odom of Nashville for the leadership post.

House Finance Chairman Craig Fitzhugh of Ripley and Tennessee Black Caucus Chairman John Deberry of Memphis have said they will vy for post, which Odom was elected to last session.

MCS hosting meeting on special school districts

On Thursday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m., the Memphis City Schools Board of Commissioners will host a special school district public information session at the board auditorium located at 2597 Avery Ave.

During the session, the board will present the findings of a University of Memphis Special School District Impact Study, which was commissioned by Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools in 2008. This study outlines the financial implications a special school district would have for the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County.
