Rain won't put a damper on downtown celebrations

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Downtown was quiet Friday afternoon but with even with pouring rain, the weather is not expected to put a damper on the celebrations happening Friday night.

Annette Koehler and her husband have been volunteering at Memphis in May for 30 years. They say it is the coldest they can remember, but they are not worried about the weather.

"The music fest is gonna go on no matter what," said Annette, who has some advice for people braving the weather for the event. "If you see signs that say 'Road closed', that basically means the road is closed."

There will be a lot of those signs along Riverside Drive, so officials say it is best to avoid that stretch of road if possible.

Annette had one more bit of advice, "If they're gonna come downtown, wear a lot of warm clothes and rain gear and umbrellas. It's gonna be cold."

At the FedExForum, fans are not worried about the Grizzlies playoff game.

Fans brave Music Fest despite cold weather

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Most Memphians know that dealing with rain during Music Fest is nothing new, but no one expected frigid weather Friday.

This year is perhaps the coldest it has ever been, according to fans who refused to let Mother Nature derail their annual plans.

"This is the coldest it's ever been since I've been coming," said music fan Melanie Martin.

While some people were committed to the outfits they picked out for warmer weather, other came prepared with heavy coats, gloves and earmuffs.

"We've been watching all week, and everyday it just kept getting a little colder and a little wetter," said music fan Terri Ward.

Bobby Crafford of legendary rockabilly band Sonny Burgess and The Pacers, who have been around since the glory days of Sun Studios, said they are prepared for the weather, too.

"Being older, we get cold easy, and we don't like the cold. I told them they better pack a heavy coat," said Crafford.

Police prepare for busy downtown weekend

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Between the Beale Street Music Festival and the Grizzlies game, hundreds of thousands of people are expected downtown this weekend.

Leaving items in the car poses the biggest threat for participants, according to police.

Kenyatta Hollingsworth learned the hard way this week in Greenbelt Park on Mud Island.

"As I was approaching my car, finishing my walk, I saw a guy getting out of my truck," said Hollingsworth. "He had my purse and jumped in the car and took off."

Crooks popped a lock on her SUV and got away with cash, credit cars, a driver's license, and even her library card.

"I was just thinking my life is in my purse, everything is in my purse," said Hollingsworth.

Memphis police said that particular crime may be the most common as thousands of people descend on downtown Memphis this weekend.
