Overnight temp a record for August 1, among the hottest ever

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Increasingly hot weather has set a record in Memphis.

The National Weather Service says the overnight minimum temperature at midnight Monday at Memphis International Airport was 82 degrees, breaking a record for the date of 80 set in 1980.

It was also the ninth-warmest overnight low ever for Memphis in records that date to 1872 and was the warmest overnight low since Aug. 24, 1982.

Family says goodbye to father killed in pit bull attack

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - In the front row of Lake Grove Missionary Baptist Church Saturday morning, relatives held each other and wept as 71-year-old William Parker was memorialized.

"I just don't want to see them close the casket," said Parker's daughter, Gardenia. "I don't want them to close the casket."

Gardenia Parker was overcome by emotional and physical pain after losing her father.  She was among the injured on July 20th, when two lose pit bulls attacked her, her father and two paramedics.

Grizzlies announce memorial service for Lorenzen Wright

Action News 5 received the following from the Memphis Grizzlies:

Memphis, Tennessee - Memorial services were announced today for Lorenzen Wright Sr. Wright, 34, tragically was found dead on July 28 in southeast Memphis.

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Wright family are inviting members of the community to FedExForum at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4 to pay their respects to Wright, a Memphis native who starred at Lafayette High School (MS), Booker T. Washington High School, the University of Memphis and with the Grizzlies. Doors will open at noon.

Parking will be free in the Toyota Parking Garage. Space for the memorial service at FedExForum will be limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Booker T. Washington alumni plan Wright memorial

Alumni of Booker T. Washington High School are planning a memorial reunion for Lorenzen Wright this Sunday.

The event will be held at Streets Ministries, located at 430 Vance Avenue in Memphis.  It will be held from 4pm to 6pm.

According to organizers, "the memorial is open to the public and everyone is invited to show their love and support for Lorenzen."

Parents of truant children face possible jail time

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Over a half dozen mothers faced a Memphis judge Friday because their children have missed two much school.

In hopes of keeping kids from getting locked up, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office once again brought parents with truant children close to the slammer.

"You'll be in jail," Judge L. Loyce Lambert-Ryan told one parent. "Let's not have that."

St. Jude celebrates Tri Delta woman for reaching $10 million goal

A recognition dinner for the members of Delta Delta Delta Fraternity (Tri Delta) will celebrate the completion of their campaign to raise $10 million in 10 years for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  They met the goal in just four years.

The dinner will be held at Kay Kafe at St. Jude on Saturday, July 31 beginning at 7 p.m.

A program will follow dinner, including remarks by Richard C. Shadyac, Jr., CEO of ALSAC, Jackye Clark, Tri Delta President, and an award presentation to the more than 200 Tri Delta women for their accomplishment.
