Local barbecue icon hangs up his apron | News
MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - After 45 years, an icon at a famous Memphis barbecue restaurant is hanging up his apron.
Jack Dyson, 77, started his career at Rendezvous as a bus boy. He then worked his way up the food chain.
"I started bussing tables, and after a couple of weeks he said he wanted to move me to the floor, and I've been waiting tables ever since," said Dyson.
Because of his hard work, he was able to put four children through college.
He has even been honored by Tennessee lawmakers.
Dyson's coworkers celebrated his legacy and thank him for his hard work with a surprise going away party.
"We be with each other more than we do our families at home, so we're family," said Dyson.
As he puts on his apron one last time, he says goodbye to the tables but not the stories.
"I'm going to miss the place," said Dyson.
Dyson said he plans to continue working at the Rendezvous concession stands at the FedExForum.
"I mean we're going to miss him. (So) are many of his customers, you know he's waited on four generations of people," said Rendezvous co-owner John Vergos.
