#MEMLUV hashtag supports Southwest Airlines | News
MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - The Memphis Chamber of Commerce wants Mid-Southerners to show some "MEMLUV" to Southwest Airlines.
The hashtag #MEMLUV took off Tuesday as part of the chamber's promotion for the soon to arrive airline at the Memphis International Airport.
"What we've been doing is working on a specific chamber promotion surrounding getting more people to sign up on their frequent flyer program which is the Southwest rapid rewards program. And what that does is, it signals to Southwest how much support there is out there for them in the zip code ranges around the Memphis airport," said Memphis Chamber President John Moore.
The Memphis Chamber's promotion is a sort of birthday gift on Southwest's 42nd birthday.
"All you have to do is go to memphischamber.com, and you will see a window pane that has the Southwest Airlines airplane on it with a guitar and it says, 'Enroll now," said Moore.
Moore said it only takes about two minutes to sign up. Southwest will them send the user a member number and emails about special offers and fares – available only to rapid rewards members. It is free. Best of all members will be eligible to win free tickets on Southwest Airlines.
The promotion ends November 30. The drawing will be held in December, but before that the Memphis Chamber hopes to sign up at least 50,000 people.
"And we want them to know this is going to be one of the best markets they ever entered," said Moore. "We're asking everybody, retweet, put it on Facebook. We want this to go viral. We want them to see how much we really want them here."
