2013 Orpheum summer movie series

2013 Orpheum summer movie series

This year the Orpheum's 2013 Summer Movie Series will commemorate the theatre’s 85th Anniversary, with a selection of films from the past eight and half decades. The series will run from June to August at the Orpheum Theatre. “As a former Malco Theatre, the Orpheum has a strong connection to movies, so we want to celebrate our history through this year’s series,” said Orpheum President and CEO Pat Halloran.

The Orpheum is also  partnering with Indie Memphis for The Summer Movie Series event. Indie Memphis will present guest speakers, film critics, and local filmmakers preceding the Friday Night Classics. Presenters will share their personal stories and experiences with these films as well as little known facts about film and film history.

Annual Tribute Luncheon gets soulful with 'Bean'

Annual Tribute Luncheon gets soulful with 'Bean'

It was a sold out crowd that packed the Cook Convention Center for the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis annual Tribute Luncheon. The audience was wowed by Broadway star and recording artists Shoshana Bean, who charmed the crowd with her appreciation of Memphis music, bar-be-que, and the work that the Women's Foundation does to improve the lives of women and children. Bean then belted out a soulful R&B tune. It turns out several members of her band are originally from Memphis, and she couldn't wait to tour the city. Bean visited the STAX Music Academy, which she praised. Several attendees whipped out their checkbooks to be one of 200 people to receive Shoshana Bean's latest CD.
