Ohio man pleads not guilty in Memphis laser arrest

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - An Ohio man pleaded not guilty Thursday to federal charges that he conspired with two other men to point bright green laser lights from a downtown Memphis rooftop toward a police helicopter and Mississippi River towboats.

Todd Michael Manz appeared in federal court in handcuffs and a tan jail jumpsuit after his arrest with two other men early Saturday.

Manz, David Erminger and Matthew Mauck have been indicted on charges of performing an act of violence against a person onboard a ship and conspiracy to interfere with operation of aircraft.

The indictment said the men were on the roof of an apartment building this past weekend when a police helicopter was hit with bright green laser lights as it investigated reports that a FedEx plane and towboats pushing barges on the Mississippi were targeted by laser beams.

Memphis Mayor Wharton unveils community policing plan for Downtown
