NAACP holding consolidation meeting

The local branch of the NAACP will hold a meeting on the proposed consolidation of Memphis and Shelby County governments.

The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26 at the Mt. Olive CME Cathedral Church. The church is at 528 Linden.

In order for consolidation to take place, it must be approved by Shelby County’s voters. They’ll cast their ballots on the issue during the Nov. 2 election.

New church moving into Downtown

Downtown Presbyterian is inviting people to come celebrate its opening with a special service and cookout on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m.

“We are developing a church community that is intentional about authentic relationships among all downtowners regardless of race or class,” the church’s pastor Richard Rieves said in a written statement. “We are committed to relationships that are centered on grace, mercy, integrity and respect.”

Downtown Presbyterian will be the third church Reives has led. Before coming back to Memphis, the Christian Brothers High School graduate was the pastor of a Colorado church and before that, spent a decade leading Christ PCA in Olive Branch.

Trolley art tour helping feed hungry

While they’re shopping in South Main, people have also been dropping off food this week to help make sure hungry Mid-Southerners have something to eat.

The Food Chain on South Main has been going on all week, but it wraps up Friday, Sept. 24 with the monthly trolley tours of the area’s art gallery. Workers with the Mid-South Food Bank will be out in force, collecting cash and food donations from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Visitors can also bid on an art during a silent auction while listening to music students from the Visible School.

Get rid of your old prescriptions safely, legally

People can turn in their unwanted or expired prescriptions this weekend and make sure they’re disposed of properly.

“Unused medications fall into the wrong hands on a daily basis,” said a police representative in a written statement. “By disposing of your unused or expired prescriptions in a safe manner, it will ensure the safety of a loved one or someone in our community.”

The Drug Enforcement Agency is partnering with Memphis police and local Kroger stores in an effort to help curb prescription drug abuse by sponsoring the first Pill Take-Back Day.

Officers will be taking medicine at four Kroger stores around the city on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. People can turn in the drugs anonymously and the department says officers won’t ask any questions.

Classical music at St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral is hosting a free classical concert for music lovers.

Ensemble Metales will play at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7.

Here’s some more information from the church:

Dr. David Spencer, renowned associate professor of trumpet at the University of Memphis, will be joined by trombonist Eddie Clark and organist Scott Elsholz for a classical concert of music for brass and organ.

Middle College takes top honors in Urban Debate

After a record number of 168 debaters competed through four rounds, Middle College High School and Kingsbury High School took top honors. The Middle College High School debate team of Danny Shields and William Tucker took first place at the Varsity level, while the Kingsbury High team of Ishmael Desalegne and Chasity Gowdy led the Junior Varsity Teams.

Top Varsity Speaker was Jessica Medders of Craigmont High School. Dawnisha Joiner of Whitehaven High School was named Top Speaker in the Junior Varsity Division.

Our next tournament will be Oct. 15 and 16 at Kingsbury High School and will have five preliminary rounds followed by three elimination rounds to determine the winning teams.

Mobile command center keeps information flowing during disaster

Shelby County has a new tool to help keep people safe and help ensure essential services get back up and running during a disaster.

The county Office of Preparedness just received a new mobile command center that will let local leaders keep working if the group’s headquarters is damaged during a disaster. The 36 foot long trailer might not look very special from the outside, but it’s packed with almost everything emergency officials will need to help them respond in a crisis.
